Grândola Municipal Library

FORA + Beth Hughes
Competition - Library - Grândola - 2012

The hegemony of social networks renewed the interest in the experience of the collective: the library is the privileged stage for the gathering of the community. Programmatic variety is expressed in the juxtaposition of two concrete tubes in impossible equilibrium, liberating space in the interior of the plot that becomes exterior: the facade raised from the ground shares a palm tree garden with the entrance; a courtyard at the end of the atrium is a forest of poplars.

This tectonic duality potentiates an infinite number of spatial occupations: the reading tunnel is a space for individual work, with controlled acoustics; the adjacent terraces accommodate the areas for collective activities, under the filtered light of the concrete shell roof.
